Trauma and Technology Overuse

NEW YORK | TELEHEALTH | SCREEN HABITS & MENTAL HEALTH

Reclaim Your Attention. Rebalance Your Life.

Navigating the Digital Landscape

A sustainable, intentional relationship with technology is within reach, whether you are contending with endless scrolling, digital burnout, or what many call phone addiction. Constant connectivity, algorithmic engagement, and relentless screen demands can quietly fracture focus, drain energy, and disrupt daily life.

In clinical practice, heavy or automatic technology use can often appear with something older: a trauma history, anxiety, depression, ADHD, or chronic stress. The device becomes a reliable way to step away from what feels unmanageable, and over time that relief hardens into a pattern that runs on its own. A growing research literature links childhood adversity with problematic smartphone and internet use in adulthood.

This is why screen habits can be so resistant to app timers and willpower alone. What sustains them is not weakness; it is often the same internal pressure the rest of therapy is built to address.

Treating Excessive Screen Time in Adults

Within my psychotherapy practice, screen patterns are treated in context. If you are already in therapy with me for trauma, mood, or relationships, excessive screen time can be addressed within the same integrative frame, drawing on EMDR, Internal Family Systems, and somatic approaches to reach what the scrolling is managing.

When Technology Is the Main Concern

For adults whose primary concern is technology itself, I founded The Technology Treatment Practice, a clinical practice devoted entirely to adult technology overuse, from entrenched habits to what many describe as screen addiction.

It offers individual therapy, clinical intensives, and Mindful Screen Use for Adults: A 10-Week Online Therapy Group, a small virtual cohort limited to eight members. Current cohort dates and enrollment details are on the group page.

Your well-being is the priority.
